Usually, I buy wheels & tires from my local Discount Tire store. But I just bought a set of wheels & tires from Tire Rack, because they had the specific wheels I wanted. I’m very happy with !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , but Tire Rack didn’t balance them very well.
I called Tire Rack, and they said they’d refund me up to $80 toward balancing, no receipt needed. I called my local Discount Tire and lifetime (of the tires) balancing is $63. I’ve got an appointment this afternoon. Score one for Tire Rack messing up their balance job the first time.
UPDATE: I had the balance job done at Discount, and on my way back to work the vibration in my steering wheel was gone. Tire Rack is processing a refund for the cost of the balancing. I’m both annoyed at Tire Rack that they couldn’t just balance the wheels right the first time, but also happy that they paid for lifetime balancing at Discount. You know, just in case I flat spot them or something.

I miss Discount Tire...was the only automotive service place I've ever been where I had consistently adequate experiences. I've seriously considered buying my own Hunter machines just to not have to deal with the shitheads around here.

What made to realize that the balance was off?

On the highway, the steering wheel is vibrating more now than before I put the wheels on.

Same. They need to expand to eastern states!

Consistently adequate is a good way to describe them.
You still might end up waiting a while, or have to do a little digging around online to find the best price to ask them to match, or do a little haggling when they try to sell you the road hazard warranty, but overall it’s usually a positive experience for me.
What I like the most is they’ve special ordered stuff for me that isn’t even listed on Discount Tire Direct, and price match on those special orders as well. I almost bought a different set of wheels and the same tires from Discount, but I liked the ones from Tire Rack, and they’re not a brand Discount could order, so I went with Tire Rack.
Right now my stock wheels are sitting in my garage with the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3s that the previous owner had put on them. When winter comes around I’m planning to bring them to Discount to put some winter tires on, that will likely be yet another special order. Those will be either Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 or Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3. The Michelins are my first choice but I may end up with the Pirellis if they’re significantly cheaper.

Yeah its usually painfully obvious when balancing is off. It is not something you can just ignore lol.

Yep, for me they never once screwed up an install or balance, never scored the crap out of my wheels, refused to patch or plug as an excuse to upsell, nor megatorqued the lugs when putting them on. That’s all I want from a tire place...I’ve never got it elsewhere.
As a bonus they did two things I wouldn’t have expected: 1. backdated a road hazard warranty when a big nail with a spool of wire attached completely shredded a tire with <1k miles on it (without asking, I figured I was just buying a new tire and they brought me a bill for like 50 bucks or something); 2. Desk guy knew I was a price matcher since I did it every time so when I’d call to set up a buy he’d go ahead and look, on his own accord. Once he found a lower price than I did and he let me know about it rather than just sticking it to me.
Wasn't perfect: lobby was always a mess, AC almost never worked, toilet was out of order as often as it was functional, the techs weren't particularly friendly...but none of that really matters to me.

I’ve also had great experiences with them. They seem to spend more time with someone they recognize as an enthusiast, and I’ve always gotten good service. Plus, neither of my cars came with spares, so it’s nice to have a local place to go.

I used to work with a guy that wouldn't balance rear wheels...

I had a similar issue. bought cheap tires. they didn’t balance well. took to discount and they got the car smooth as glass. Paid $16 each but have lifetime balance now.
tires picked up a vibe again, they balanced them again, no charge.
